Jamie McMillan: ‘Evangelist’ for the skilled trades
WHEN JAMIE MCMILLAN interacts with high school students, it’s hard to tell if she’s a student or the teacher. She acts young, has boundless energy and fits in with students—which is a bit ironic, considering she dropped out of high school her senior year. But after getting her GED, and becoming a journeyman with the Ironworkers (she’s currently a Boilermaker apprentice), she now works the tools six months of the year. She spends the rest of the year speaking to school-age kids through her business KickAss Careers—a name students picked.

ACTIMS Women In Trades Awards/Bursaries Program
The Women In Trades Awards/Bursaries Program was created to recognize women who are members of the Canadian Building Trades, and to bring awareness of employment opportunities for women in the skilled trades. This annual award/bursaries program provides 3 recipients each with $1,500, for a total of $4,500 in awards. Application deadline is April 30, 2021.

Notice for proposed amendments to the constitution and other resolutions
Pursuant to Article 2.9 of the Constitution, the Local 128 Secretary Treasurer must submit to Headquarters (by June 4, 2021) all proposed amendments to the International Brotherhood Constitution and/or all other resolutions having to do with the establishment of or declaration of policy in order for them to be reported to the delegates of the 34th Consolidated Convention. To read the communication from IST Creeden log into Members Only (select “Lodges” in the main menu and then the "Local 128" tab).
To submit a resolution(s) or amendment(s) please ensure that Local 128 receives your submission by email at: info@ibblocal128.org with the subject line IBB Resolution Submission no later than May 7th, 2021. In your type written or clearly printed resolution / amendment, please reference the applicable article and article name that it corresponds to in the current International Brotherhood Constitution.

Winter Power Sports Safety Tips
Tip 1 - Speed: Ride at a realistic speed to prevent injury and reduce the risk of accidents.
Tip 2 - Tethers: Invest in a tether to shut the motor off if you are separated from your machine. Always wear the tether when sledding.
Tip 3 - Ice: No matter the season, be cautious around frozen water. Be aware of the ice depth and strength, and stagger snowmobiles while crossing. Grey and slushy ice should be avoided!
Tip 4 - The Buddy System: No matter your skill level, ride with at least one other person and stay together.
Tip 5 - Don’t Exceed Skill Set: Make sure everyone in the group is comfortable with the trip plan and that it matches their abilities. Never give a young person a machine with more horsepower than they can safely operate.
Tip 6 - PPE: Dress for the weather and always wear your helmet.
Tip 7 - Sobriety: Never operate a snow machine under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Driving a snow machine while impaired carries the same penalties as operating a motor vehicle.
Tip 8 - Be prepared for an emergency with a first aid kit, signally flares, something to build a fire if needed.
Five Key Safety Guidelines for Riding in Avalanche Country
Tip 1 - GET THE GEAR: Ensure everyone has an avalanche transceiver, shovel, and probe on their person and knows how to use them.
Tip 2 - GET THE TRAINING: Take an avalanche course.
Tip 3 - GET THE FORECAST: Make a riding plan based on the current avalanche and weather forecast.
Tip 4 - GET THE PICTURE: If you see recent avalanche activity unstable snow exists. Riding on or underneath slopes is dangerous.
Tip 5 - GET OUT OF HARM'S WAY: One at a time on all avalanche slopes. Don't go to help your stuck friend. Don’t group up in runout zones.
